The documented commercial dispute involving Varamar Shipping, Alexander Varvarenko and an unpaid brokerage commission is gradually moving beyond the maritime industry.

The project “THE BROKER (THE KALNY VS. VARVARENKO CASE)”, based on the documented chronology of these events, has been registered and submitted for consideration in Hollywood to ten leading US market participants, including literary agencies and independent production companies.

At this stage, the project is under consideration only. Any possible development into a feature film or limited series will depend on the interest of representatives of the US entertainment industry.

The commercial background

The story unfolds in wartime Ukraine.

A Ukrainian shipbroker participated in an international maritime transaction from Kyiv while the city was facing regular air-raid alerts, missile attacks and power disruptions.

The maritime operation was completed.

Varamar Shipping received approximately USD 400,000 in freight and related additional compensation.

The brokerage commission for the work performed remains unpaid.

On 23 March 2026, Alexander Varvarenko personally informed the broker that “your commission” would not be paid and would instead be used in connection with alleged reputational damage.

That communication later became one of the central elements of the dispute.

From a commercial dispute to a police complaint

The story did not end there.

Alexander Varvarenko, through his lawyer, submitted a complaint to the Ukrainian police concerning the broker whose commission remained unpaid.

The complaint contained allegations related to extortion, moving the conflict from a purely commercial dispute into the sphere of criminal-law allegations.

An important distinction must be made: the filing of a police complaint does not itself establish that a crime was committed, that the person concerned is guilty, or that the allegations made by the complainant are proven.

Nevertheless, this episode is a significant part of the documented chronology.

A dispute that began with a demand for payment of professional remuneration for a completed maritime transaction had now also entered the sphere of criminal-law allegations.

The approximately USD 100,000 civil claim

Varamar Shipping and Alexander Varvarenko later initiated civil proceedings seeking approximately USD 100,000, alleging reputational and moral damage connected with public statements about the dispute.

On 14 July 2026, the Solomianskyi District Court of Kyiv closed the proceedings on jurisdictional grounds.

The Court did not find that the publications were false and awarded no damages.

But the story did not end there either.

The appeal becomes increasingly personal

Following the closure of the proceedings, Alexander Varvarenko’s lawyer filed an appeal on his personal behalf.

Varamar Shipping, which had been a co-claimant in the original civil proceedings, did not file a separate appeal. Alexander Varvarenko is therefore the sole appellant at this stage.

Judging by the current procedural position, Varamar Shipping itself may not take an active role in the appeal, while the continuation of the challenge increasingly appears to be Alexander Varvarenko’s personal initiative.

This gives the story another dimension.

For the Ukrainian broker, the matter has long become much more than an unpaid invoice. It involves professional work performed during wartime, an unpaid commission, a public dispute, a police complaint and court proceedings.

At the same time, Alexander Varvarenko’s decision to continue the appeal personally also suggests that the conflict may have acquired a deeply personal significance for him as well.

Yet the original commercial issue remains unchanged: the brokerage commission is still unpaid.

Why this story is moving beyond the maritime industry

The case brings together a combination of circumstances rarely seen publicly outside professional shipping:

There is no claim that a film or series has already been commissioned or will definitely be produced. The project is currently under consideration.

But the material has taken another step forward: a dispute that began inside the maritime market over an unpaid brokerage commission is now being reviewed by potential representatives and producers far beyond the shipping industry.

“The Varvarenko Show” is not in Hollywood yet. But it is on the way.
