Shipping Industrial Equipment from China to Europe: Ro-Ro or Breakbulk?
Ro-Ro or breakbulk? How to select the right shipping method for industrial equipment and wheeled machinery from China to Europe.
Industrial equipment moving from China to Europe does not always fit into a standard container.
Large machinery, electric buses, construction equipment and oversized industrial units may require Ro-Ro, breakbulk or multipurpose shipping.
Choosing between these options depends on the cargo rather than simply the route.
Ro-Ro can be attractive for self-propelled or wheeled equipment.
The cargo can normally be driven or towed aboard, reducing the need for heavy crane lifts.
But Ro-Ro availability, port rotation and dimensional restrictions must still be checked.
Breakbulk or multipurpose vessels may be more suitable when the cargo must be lifted.
This applies particularly to machinery with unusual dimensions, heavy individual units or equipment that cannot safely move under its own power.
Before approaching owners, cargo owners should provide:
- number of units;
- dimensions of every unit;
- individual weights;
- photographs or technical drawings;
- whether units are self-propelled;
- lifting points;
- loading and discharging ports;
- preferred shipment dates.
For electric vehicles, battery information and relevant safety documentation may also be required.
There is no universal answer to whether Ro-Ro or breakbulk is cheaper.
The commercial result depends on vessel availability, routing, handling costs, cargo dimensions and timing.
Kiev Shipping works with cargo owners moving industrial equipment and wheeled machinery from China to Europe and other international destinations.
The first step is therefore not choosing Ro-Ro or breakbulk.
It is providing enough technical information to compare both alternatives properly.
