Ship Chartering: Why the Freight Rate Is Not Enough

At first glance, ship chartering may seem straightforward: there is a cargo, loading and discharge ports, and a required shipment period. The next step appears to be finding a suitable vessel and agreeing the freight rate.

In practice, the rate is only one part of the decision.

The vessel must be suitable for the cargo, draft and port restrictions must be checked, the expected loading and discharge performance must be realistic, and all additional costs and charter-party terms must be reviewed.

A low freight offer may become expensive if the vessel requires extra port equipment, cannot load the full quantity, arrives outside the required dates or creates demurrage exposure.

The owner’s reliability, the vessel’s condition and the practical feasibility of the voyage are equally important.

The role of an experienced shipbroker is not simply to locate open tonnage. The broker compares offers, identifies hidden risks, negotiates commercial terms and supports the shipment after the fixture is concluded.
